Cervical cancer is one of the common malignant tumors. The incidence ranks second among all cancers in women. Report from 2012 Cancer Statistics in China showed a total of 99 thousand new breast cancer cases and the projected number of new cases in 2016 is about 159 thousand. Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is a confirmed risk factor. Now two vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, are available for prevention of HPV infection. Other risk factors include early sex contact, early childbearing, multiple fertilities and many sexual partners. There are usually no symptoms at early stage and abnormal vaginal bleeding often appear at late stage. The treatments with surgery and radiation therapy are commonly used. However, the cure rate is very low in patients with advanced cervical cancer. The prognosis depends on the staging, type of cervical cancer and tumor size. Cervical cancer can be diagnosed using a Pap smear or other procedures that sample the cervix tissue.

Gene expression profiles have been collected and molecular diagnostic product for cervical cancer is under development.
